Why We Are Here

Poverty is endemic
Poverty in Nigeria is massive, pervasive and chronic, engulfing a large proportion of the society. At the foundation of every conflict, there is a phenomenon called poverty. There is a unanimous view that adequate employment opportunities are lacking given that Nigeria’s economic problems have seriously affected industrial growth, which could have eased the problem.
Paradox of Job loss in an ever-growing population
Ironically and unfortunately, while banks, companies and government are busy retrenching, tertiary institutions are busy producing more graduates, hence, it is very difficult to provide direct employment to such a vast youth population. According to available statistics, youth unemployment has been growing geometrically since 1990.The impact of dramatic rise in youth unemployment has created victims of desperateness, frustration and insecurity leading to the generation of socially unacceptable behaviours.
Need for an effective strategy
The best strategy therefore, is for tertiary institutions to have a paradigm shift from training potential job-seekers to breeding self-reliant and job creators. A great way to achieve this is through a well-structured entrepreneurship education, which must be encouraged with all the seriousness it deserves./dd>
Existing strategies are defective
We have discovered that virtually all Nigerian tertiary institutions who proclaim they teach entrepreneurship, having produced electrical engineers who cannot fix bulb into lamp holder, chemical engineers who cannot produce liquid soap and mechanical engineers who cannot regulate generator, ignorantly or wickedly teach innocent students welding, carpentry, automobile repairs, radionics, soap making, GSM repairs etc, petty trading/small businesses instead of Entrepreneurship in gigantic multi-million entrepreneurship development centres, under the coordination of someone trained with millions as an entrepreneurship educator and not a mere vocational trainer.
It is quite unfortunate that while carpenter and petty-trader parents (for instance) blame their predicaments on lack of formal education, their wards are being taught welding and GSM repair by Nigerian entrepreneurship educators.
Existing Entrepreneurship education is too shallow and substandard
Nigerian entrepreneurship educators had failed to realise that hard skills and small business are just integral parts of entrepreneurship and not the core of entrepreneurship. Taking technical skills and small business as the essence of entrepreneurship is worse than taking criminology as the core of law and technical drawing or engineering mathematics as the only thing required of an engineer.

To worsen the case, before now, except our books in forty-six (46) different core areas of Entrepreneurship and Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship Education written by Centre for Entrepreneurship Development of YABATECH, no professional body or tertiary institution in Nigeria, with professors and doctors who receive grants in the name of entrepreneurship, can boast of a textbook in any of the core areas of entrepreneurship, even when they know texts in entrepreneurship are from foreign authors, whose views are not reflective of our national realities.
The Need to break away from education for dependency to education for independence
At Institute of Classic Entrepreneurs, we believe that one of the major challenges facing Nigeria is how to break away from education for dependency to education for independence. It means that the goal of education must shift from education for employment to education for self-employment (or education for entrepreneurship).
The Need to Formalise Entrepreneurship Education in Nigeria
Entrepreneurship education is defined as the structured formal conveyance of entrepreneurial competencies, which in turn refer to the concepts, skills and mental awareness used by individuals during the process of starting and developing their growth-oriented ventures. While all entrepreneurs are self-employed, not all self-employed persons are entrepreneurs. The emphasis is on formalising entrepreneurship education rather than leaving it for the hidden curricula, it may not be covered there, or it may be more confusing as there is lack of structure.

Entrepreneurial activities and entrepreneurship education are considered crucial to the economic development of nations. These activities are not only the incubators of technological innovation; they provide employment opportunities and increase competitiveness. Furthermore, entrepreneurship education is more than just learning about business management. It is a human capital investment to prepare a student to start a new venture through the integration of experience, skills and knowledge to develop and expand business.
There is inevitable need for redefinition of Entrepreneurship in Africa
Entrepreneurship is closely associated with inevitable ingredients like newness, organising, creating, risk- taking and reward, whether in relation to independent new-start firms or large, well-established firms; and also applicable to both private and public sectors. For you to be successful as today’s entrepreneur who will build Nigeria’s tomorrow, you need to be taught how to do the same things that our ancestors have done differently. INCENT will teach students how to do them much more efficiently, quicker and better.
