...Achieving sustainable development goals with entrepreneurial technology
Science, technology and innovation are, alongside entrepreneurship, the most powerful forces driving the progress that the world has witnessed in recent years in terms of growth, poverty reduction and overall human development." - Ms. Shamika N. Sirimanne, Director of UNCTAD's Division on Technology and Logistics.
FIND OUT MOREGenerally, scientists, engineers and technologists are renowned for their problem-solving abilities; they are working at the forefront of scientific knowledge and advancing every field of human endeavour through innovation. With entrepreneurship, scientists, engineers and technologists are more business-oriented making them create wealth from their innovative ideas and inventions by converting them into products and services, it enables them to manage their resources and the risks associated with their business ideas effectively so that they can use it to influence the world positively. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will be fully achieved only if and when all countries, in particular developing countries, are able to apply knowledge and innovation more extensively to their social and economic processes. This has been the experience of those countries that have achieved significant catch-up in terms of income and human development, where that process has gone hand in hand with technological upgrading and enhanced innovation performance by their enterprises. Dynamic, competitive enterprises materialise structural transformation by introducing new and higher value activities. They generate more diverse exports that secure vital foreign currency. They also provide more and better jobs that facilitate social inclusion, and they introduce innovations that may reduce the environmental burden of production and consumption.
It is therefore urgent to implement a policy agenda to generate and nurture innovative enterprises in developing countries. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The 17 SDGs are integrated—they recognise that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability. Countries have committed to prioritize progress for those who're furthest behind. The SDGs are designed to end poverty, hunger, AIDS, and discrimination against women and girls. The creativity, knowhow, technology and financial resources from all of society are necessary to achieve the SDGs in every context. Science, technology and innovation (STI, as referred to in the UN context) have for a long time been recognized as one of the main drivers behind productivity increases and a key long-term lever for economic growth and prosperity. In the context of the Post-2015 Agenda and for achieving the SDGs, STI plays an even more central role. Actually, STI features strongly in Sustainable Development Goals
